MVW Nutritionals supports MECFA
MVW Nutritionals in Europe and the Middle East, sponsored the continued development of the MECFA website. Their donation will allow MECFA to further develop educational tools for members in areas of nutrition and gastroenterology.
Currently in the Middle East, CF specific multivitamins are not available to patients. MVW Nutritionals is dedicated to ensuring all patients in the region have access to CF specific vitamins. To learn more about SPS medical and MVW Nutritionals, visit them at http://mvwnutritionals.com/.
Most patients affected by cystic fibrosis (CF) malabsorb dietary fats because of pancreatic insufficiency. This also affects the ability to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Evidence of fat-soluble vitamin deficiency in CF has been found by 2 months of age.
To address this common deficiency in A, D, E and K, guidelines for fat-soluble vitamin levels – which are considerable higher than normally recommended daily values – have been established, and several manufacturers have developed dose appropriate formulations. In addition, frequent monitoring of vitamin levels is important to ensure adequate serum levels, and annual monitoring has been a consensus recommendation and standard practice in many countries for over a decade.
MVW Nutritionals was formed in 2013 to develop a line of age appropriate products (Table 1) that not only included the amounts of fat-soluble vitamins as recommended in a water-miscible formulation, but importantly, one that addressed the issues known to limit use and adherence with these higher levels of fat-soluble multivitamin products (e.g. unpalatable initial and/or after-taste with chewables, unpleasant odor and belching associated with softgels).
MVW Complete Formulation® Softgels, Chewables and Drops are specifically formulated to meet the dietary needs of individuals who have difficult absorbing fat and fat-soluble vitamins, as seen in cystic fibrosis; and provide the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K in a water-miscible formulation, plus B vitamins, vitamin C, folic acid and zinc. Products also contain the anti-oxidants beta carotene, ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, and zinc and are gluten free.
Initial taste-testing by CF Care Givers suggested MVW Nutritionals had accomplished this important goal, a belief that has continued to grow as we have seen use – both with first-time and returning patients - grow among children, teens and adults and CF Centers across the United States and other countries.
MVW Nutritionals also recognized that many patients require more vitamin D than offered in most CF-specific multivitamin products, adding to the pill burden and cost of managing this disease as patients and families add additional and needed vitamin D to their daily regimen.
“Vitamin D deficiency has been reported to occur in 10-40% of children with CF, and in more than 81% of adults, especially in northern latitudes”
“In 2008, one U.S. CF Center found in a study that 262 patients who were receiving a CF-specific vitamin, that nearly half were vitamin D deficient”
“A recent study, prior to the launch of the MVW Complete Formulation multivitamin products, found more than 90% of patients had 25(OHD) levels less than 30ng/ml. 30ng/ml is considered insufficient”
To eliminate the need for additional pills and address the vitamin D deficiency that is common in patients with CF, MVW Nutritionals developed two additional products . The first product addresses the “Step One” increase in vitamin D as recommended in the CF Foundations Clinical Care Guidelines for vitamin D deficiency.
“Step One” increase multivitamin products are available in both chewable (MVW Complete Formulation® D3000 Orange Chewables) and softgel (MVW Complete Formulation® D3000 Softgels) forms and increase vitamin D3 content from 1500 IUs to 3000 IUs. The second product address the higher level of vitamin D needed for a “Step Two” increase. This multivitamin product (MVW Complete Formulation® D5000 Softgels) is available only as a softgel and has 5000 IUs of vitamin D3.
Only MVW Nutritionals offers a time tested and proven , age and dose specific line of multivitamin products, formulated to meet the needs of individuals who have difficulty absorbing fat-soluble vitamins, as seen in CF.
